Tails!

OK... so this is something a bit interesting for Mackland Border Collie owners... it is no secret that these dogs are a bit loopy when it comes to activity.. and along with any excitement, the tails go all over the place.... while it is cute and quite endearing, for those wanting to show in conformation, it is a bit of a pain (because you want to excite your dog in the ring, to show great expression, and also to move with purpose)... then the tails go up too high!

Sam has been investigating training the tails, so those of you that want to do Conformation can have a little read at this that she found on the net:

Training tails!

There are multiple steps here, but it's all done in brief sessions with a high rate of reinforcement, so it should go fast and be fun. I have personally re-set more than a few show-dog tails with this recipe, including some collies.
Teach the dog to move her tail deliberately, at a standstill. You can use a target stick and touch the tail gently and try to have her move her tail away from the touch. Start by asking the dog to move the tail left or right (not up or down, that's harder) away from the touch.
Just moving the tail to the left or right requires the dog to do something consciously that dogs usually do unconsciously. In fact, as soon as the dog discovers that tail moving is the game, the first move will be to wag the tail; it's the only thing they know how to do on purpose. Click that! Then work on just one move, away from the target stick—or, free-shape a move one side, and then the other, without the target; your choice. That way you don't have to fade the target.
When the dog can move the tail consciously, then you can use the target to teach "lower your tail" and "raise your tail." Do this from standing still. Even if you don't want an overly raised or "gay" tail you should teach the dog to raise the tail for a click as well as lower it. That helps the dog become aware of how it feels to deliberately manage your tail: it must be, for them, sort of like for you trying to learn to wiggle your ears or cross your eyes. First you need to become aware of the muscles that do that.
Now put "raise" and "lower" the tail on a verbal cue and fade out the target completely if you have been using one.
Now, with someone else leading the dog (and feeding the treats) you introduce the target again as a prompt, for the first couple of clicks, and teach raising and lowering the tail ON CUE at a walk with the clicker. This sounds like a lot of trouble but we're talking one or two minute sessions, ten or twenty clicks per session, and in two sessions the dog should have it figured out, i.e., learned the cue and learned how to address the necessary muscles to give a visible response.
You do not need to worry about how much the tail is raised or lowered, in fact it's better if you don't. Just click any clear movement without trying to shape a strong movement. You are teaching the dog to make the tail move up or down on cue, NOT to hold it in some particular position. You are literally teaching the dog to think about its tail, and direct its movements consciously, which will be very interesting for the dog.
The final stage is to have someone else gait the dog—slowly at first—while the trainer asks for "low tail" if/when the tail starts to go up and over the back. Then click the teeniest effort to move the tail down, even if it's crooked or waving. Stop and jackpot, and try again. If the dog is showing confidence you can start clicking for approaches to the angle you like best.

Morning, Moons!

The pups are in the front again this morning - they need to runnn!

Dirty puppies after 10 minutes on the lawn this morning!

Hello granny! We have been for a swim!

The little buggers (mostly Flash) can get on the deck at the slightly lower sides.. so part of it is fenced off to give Finn a break while babysitting:

Their yard for the morning:

It's a lovely & mild day, no hot sun, no wind, no rain... so the Moon's can enjoy outside life for a day before their bath tomorrow (and then hopefully they will stay clean until they go to their new homes... wishful thinking??)

This afternoon they will get some puzzles to do, and some new surfaces to try out. Also their tugging jungle gym will be added to this yard.

Contracts and paperwork

Final Contracts for the Moons will be sent to you (hopefully today) - please all check them, fill in your details on page 2 and scan back to me before you receive your new baby. I just need to get the chip numbers into the contracts before I send them.

The rest of the paperwork is well under way - thanks Sam & Sam for your help!

Microchips

OK.. the MOONs microchips were done yesterday evening.. we had 2 screamers (Mask & Blot) and 1 extreme roller (Quilt)

And then I still have a few Exclamation pups still on my name - please sign up at getmeknown for free and request a transfer into your name:

Moons - 6 weeks

Exclamation Registrations

The KUSA Registrations have arrived!

For those of you not in PE, I will mail them to the addresses on your application forms. If you want them sent to another address, please let me know by Thursday night!

For those of you that want to transfer your baby into your name, and haven't done it before:

The Registration looks like this:

Turn over the registration - it looks like this on the back:

Then I will sign in the current owner's section, you fill in and sign the top block on the right.

Then make a photostat or scan of both sides in case it gets lost. Mail the ORIGINAL to KUSA, and they will transfer (free) the puppy to your name and mail you a new original!

Shout if you are confused...

The MOON babies are 6 weeks!

Time flies, and the Moon babies are 6 weeks! They will get their microchips tomorrow, as well as have their first tablet deworming and vet check... plus the first inoculation.

We will be doing photos tonight.. please be patient :)

I would like to register the pups as soon as I can after they get their microchips (hopefully Friday) - so those of you that have a CALL name already, please let me know what it is, so that I can match the Registered name as closely as possible.

Afternoon

The pups are in the front yard this afternoon... loose... hope the destruction isn't too bad when I get home! Finn and Maverick are babysitting :)

And of course.... I wouldn't be me without this:

Today is a good day!

Today is a good day! The weather is nice, the pups are all out in the back pen for the morning (poor neighbour) and I didn't step in shit.....! This is a good thing because I have new shoes (not ideal)...
Today's poo cleanup was QUICK - the pups were so good in the inside pen during the night. About an hour after putting them to bed last night, Blot started screaming for attention so I took him outside... straight onto the lawn for a poo - what a good boy!! I took the rest that were awake out too, so there was far less cleanup this morning :) So from today if the weather is ok, they can stay outside much later at night

Yesterday was.. NOT so good.... woke up to poo smell, went to puppy room and took pups out, cleaned poo, got poo on me, cleaned myself, took pups breakfast out to the lawn, stepped in poo, cleaned my slippers, picked up poo on the lawn, stepped in poo that I missed, took slippers off and tossed them on the deck, hosed the lawn in my socks (very carefully looking for poo), back into the house to take poo newspaper out to the back, looked clock... 6am.................... back to bed... smelled poo, out of bed again looking for poo on me (thankfully not), looked at the bed.......POO - little G had had a runny tummy in the night and then got on the bed AARGH...

They like it!

Afternoon change

Ok so the weather is quite a bit better. The pups are VERY wild and VERY irritated, so I set them free on the front lawn, and I started building an afternoon fun pen. I decided to link the warm & cosy kennel on the deck to the lawn with a sloping tunnel.. hehehe hope they like it!

Bad weather again!

The pups are spending the morning on the deck as it is, once again, raining!

Busy preparing the pen......
