EPA & HDA

A number of you are enquiring as to what I feed my dogs and puppies, hence this post...

Chakotay is on Royal Canin HT42d. She has been on it since the first day of her season, so she is on day 20. She needs to be on this 42 days after first mating.

Why did I choose this food for her pregnancy?? Because of the EPA/DHA content.. Specifically for the development of eyes and brains!

Here is a little off the net on that FYI

EPA/DHA?

EPA DHA is an essential fatty acid which stands for docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. This essential fatty acid is an Omega 3 fat, which is found in cold water fish. EPA DHA are highly unsaturated fat because of they contain 6 and 5 double bonds on their long structural chain. These polyunsaturated fats play a very important role.

EPA and DHA are vital nutrients and may be taken to maintain healthy function of the brain and retina- DHA is a building block of tissue in the brain and retina of the eye. It helps with forming neural transmitters, such as phosphatidylserine, which is important for brain function. DHA is found in the retina of the eye and taking DHA may be necessary for maintaining healthy levels of DHA for normal eye function.

Also...
EPA and DHA are converted into hormone like substances called prostaglandins, and they regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.
DHA plays a very important role during fetal development, early infancy, and old age. Adding DHA to a pregnant mothers diet is beneficial for the fetus's brain development.

There's nothing like morning coffee dregs in the peace & quiet! hehehehe shame poor Chak

But I can safely say that Chak and Sunny have come to an understanding that its all over. Sunny is now courting Chak's daughter, Finn.... while little sheltie boy, Tide, makes love to Chak's forehead........

We have a tie!

Well.... finally! We had a 7 minute tie tonight :)

They are trying very hard today!

It's an experience having this red boy here...

...he is busy busy busy!

I'm having a hard time keeping him contained hehehe

My dogs wouldn't DREAM of destroying property like this!! I have replaced the plastic mesh twice, and the shadecloth once... Needless to say, it will now only be replaced again once he has gone home! My shelties think it's Christmas.. they are getting to waltz right through the gate whenever they feel like it!

Prog

Chakotay has always been an early ovulater, so I am watching every day. She is separated from Sunny each day, but I let him socialise with her in the evenings so that they can get to know each other.

Seeing that Chak is on DAY 7, with the boys in my house only mildly interested in giving her a second look, I decided to do a progesterone test... so off to the specialist we went today! He is very happy with Chak and says that she is taking her time. It looks like in 5 days she will be ready to rock 'n roll... so... we are aiming for SUNDAY! That will be day 12...

Waiting in anticipation

OK.. so I got a little bored and did an online estimate of my planned litter....
I got come interesting statistics :):)

Chances that the pups are:
CEA Affected 0%
CL Affected 0%
TNS Affected 0%
Double merle 0%

The inbreeding amount (over 12 generations) is 9%

Possible coats at a glance:
Black & white 50%
Golden Red & White 50%

Coat type of pups expected: Rough

Pups that will be carriers of ee-red: 50% (all of the non-red pups)

Chance of pups carrying the B gene (chocolate): 1%

Chance of pups carrying the D gene (dilute): 20%

Chance of the pups carrying the K gene (tri-colour): 14%

Chance of the pups carrying the A gene (sable): 13%

Now, having said that 50% of the pups are ee red, and 50% of the pups are black and white... I also got:

Chance of the pups HAVING a tri-colour coat: 86%!

Interesting.......

2013 Border Collie puppies

Hi all

The 2013 Border Collie litter has been planned! Everyone will be notified of this blog address for all news, updates, information, photographs, videos etc, so if you are waiting for one of the "Red" litter puppies, this is the place to be.

The dam is my Chakotay (CH Majestic Elite Brave Chakotay for Mackland CGC). She is 5 years old, imported from Kentucky, USA, and this will be her last litter. Chakotay is a sweet girl that has had some hard times, but has managed to get through it. She has a lovely temperament, and will get along with anything on the planet. She has produced some lovely working pups, and all gorgeous to boot! Most are training in Agility, and there are already a number that are Conformation Champions. There is also 1 obedience Champion already! Chak comes from a line of "working breed dogs" in the USA out of Australia. She is a medium sized girl, with a medium flat coat. Chakotay was extremely easy to train, and she competes in Agility and Dog Jumping, and has a number of QC's, and is also a Conformation Champion. Chakotay carries ee-red, so there is a possibility of both black and white as well as ee-red pups. In addition, she may also carry seal, sable, blue and tri-colour.

The sire, Sunny, is co-owned with Johlene Lenaers. He is a very young imported boy - Gift from Zion for Mackland - from Dreams Border in Venice, Italy. His lines are very similar to Chakotay's, and there are some dogs in the pedigree that double up, so, in essence, it is a line breeding. He has a medium-rough coat, and his colour is ee-red. I am not sure if he carries any other colours, but time will tell.
Sunny is showing great promise with his training - he is focussed, keen and quick. His ancestors are Conformation dogs that have excelled in Obedience and Dancing!

Chakotay is due for her season now in October, and then Sunny will be brought to Port Elizabeth. Preparations are underway, and Chakotay & I are all set for the litter. Both are DNA cleared for hereditary conditions and Sunny only requires his hips to be checked. This will be done before the mating takes place.
Should there be any ee-red pups from this litter, they will be the first born on SA soil!

Please stay tuned for the next news.

Nadine

The newest Mackland addition

Well, the time has come! Introducing the newest addition to Mackland - Excellent Choice On a Mission for Mackland:

"Tide" comes from Germany and he is MDR1 Clear as well as CEA Clear by DNA testing. He is a stunning little "crazy" dog that I hope to spend many years working in Agility!

Preparations underway for 2 litters this year

I am gearing up for this year's 2 litters. The border collie litter is all set to go, so hopefully we will get some successful matings in a month's time.

In preparation for the very active litter that I am expecting, I have got them a little present:

It's a puppy tunnel!! An exact replica of a competition tunnel but just a smaller version. I can't wait for them to test this out! Little Agility stars in the making :)

Later this year I am also planning a sheltie litter. There are 2 boys lined up, but testing is still under way, and pending the results, the date and the male will be comfirmed.

First Dog Jumping Shows for the Agility Litter!

Photos by Kayleigh Heideman

Finn, Rush and Cal had a great weekend - it's so rewarding for me to see my babies excelling in all fields. Chakotay has really made wonderful babies! On the first show weekend of the year, at his first 2 shows, Rush had 4 clear rounds in the Dog Jumping, earning him TWO qualifications!

Disappointment

Well, the exciting news turned out to be a bit of a disappointment... My special boy arrived and is STUNNING STUNNING STUNNING... beautiful long body, not coarse or heavy in any way, excellent bone, beautiful head and markings, colouring to die for, perfect angulation, drive drive drive, and a divine temperament.... grrrr and then I looked in his mouth :(

Standstill Braveheart (Stirling) has a wry mouth and is also undershot. He cannot be shown, nor used in my breeding program. I am pretty broken up about it. He has been homed in a loving home where he will work and play and dance!

I just didn't think it was fair to have him in my home and do nothing. He was supposed to be my show and stud dog, and was going to do Flyball, but for me to commit to another full-time working dog was just unfair to my other dogs, and unfair to him, so I let him go.

But.....

It has prompted me to do some hard thinking and investigating and research and I am formulating a plan B. It should be interesting, to say the least. There is still some legwork to do, and the first step will be done next week.

Will keep you all posted.

NEWS

I have some exciting news..! The next Border Collie litter will be announced shortly. It is planned for end 2013, pending all testing :)

Chakotay will be having her last litter with a very special boy that is coming into South Africa in July this year... He is something a little different, and I am sure you will all love him as much as I do!

So, I will keep you all posted as to the progress of this litter. I am taking names of interested parties, but preference will be given to dual Conformation and Agility homes, homes of previous Mackland dogs, and people with great references!

The beautiful boy is also booked to be used at stud on 2 other girls in the future, so there are some exciting border collies on the horizon as I expand my line to include some Hungarian breeding! (Don't worry, I'm not losing my Australian lines at all)

I expect to add some more bone and colour to my lines, and still keep the drive, workability and character of my fiesty Borders!

To be kept in the loop, please mail me to go on the "information" list. mackland@telkomsa.net (there is already a list of names down for possible puppies)

As soon as the young man is on South African soil, I will post details and photographs. (And then news on the "BRAVE" litter :)
