ee-Red is Australian Red, also called ee- because of the genes. (I will explain at the bottom)
Border collies ONLY come in 2 colours - these are the base colours: black and liver (also called red or brown):
All other colours are based on these, for example - blue merle and red merle - these are black and liver dogs, each with a merle gene (M) added.
When a dilute gene is added to the black or liver, they become blue and lilac:
These can be mixed with the merle gene as well (a black dog can have dilute plus merle = slate merle and a liver dog can have dilute and merle = lilac merle:
There are loads of other variations, 2 of which are in my lines:
Seal & Sable
Seal resembles a type of brindle/ red shimmer to the coat and sable (a colour after my heart) is on a different locus altogether (A-locus) - as it appears in shelties too.

ee-Red example
A black & white border collie is represented by 2 healthy black genes (EE)
An ee-red and white border collie is represented by 2 "defective" black genes (ee)
An ee-red and white border collie is represented by 2 "defective" black genes (ee)
A black & white border collie, that carries ee-red is represented by 1 of each gene (Ee)
Black is dominant, you only need 1 copy of the gene to create black.
Australian red is recessive, you need 2 copies to create red.
Australian red is recessive, you need 2 copies to create red.
Each puppy takes a gene from mom and a gene from dad to make up their genes.
2x EE (black) dogs will only have black puppies
An EE (black) and an Ee (black carrying red) will only have black pups
2x Ee (black carrying red) dogs will have both black & ee-red puppies
2x ee (ee-red) dogs will only have ee-red puppies
If you have an ee-red female (who physically looks gold and white but is from a blue dam), what are the colour possibilities of offspring when bred to a non ee-red male? Will all these puppies take the sires colour since they will only receive one copy of the ee gene?
ReplyDeleteIf I undrstund, if i have a girl ee-red and the boy ee-red, I will have all the pupies ee red ? Best regards
Saludos cordiales, Mackland!!
ReplyDeleteWhat about breeding lilac and ee red?
ReplyDeleteWhen people specify ee red is that because there is another type or red?
